5 Fights To Watch In The Month Of February

The month of February has some MMA bangers on the schedule. These are the five fights to watch this month.

John Dodson vs Pedro Munhoz – This is a Bantamweight fight between two fighters ranked in the top ten. John Dodson is a former championship contender that is now ranked #8. While Pedro Munhoz has reached #10 by winning 4 straight.

Dodson is still a championship calibre fighter. Since his loss to champion Demetrious Johnson, Dodson has traded wins and losses going 2-2 in his last four. The two losses, which were via split-decision,  have come against tough opponents in John Lineker and Marlon Moraes. This is a fight that Dodson needs to win against a tough up and coming fighter.

While Dodson was trading wins and losses, Pedro Munhoz was busy winning his last four fights. In those four fights, Munhoz has won three Performance bonuses – all by submission victory. Other than his split-decision loss to Jimmie Rivera in 2015, a fight against John Dodson will be the toughest test of Munhoz’ career.

Mark Hunt vs Curtis Blaydes – Heavyweights, Mark Hunt and Curtis Blaydes are set to throw down at UFC 221 on February 10. There is no doubt these two heavy-handed heavyweights will try to finish each other, all the while putting on a great show for MMA fans.

Mark Hunt has done nothing but put on entertaining fights whether he won or lost. The #5 ranked heavyweight has fought some of the best in the UFC including champion Stipe Miocic. Although he lost to Miocic, it wasn’t without a fight. In seven of his 15 UFC fights, Hunt has won some sort of fight bonus. There is no doubt, Mark Hunt comes ready to fight every time out and don’t expect the fight with Curtis Blaydes to be any different.

Curtis Blaydes, the #9 ranked heavyweight, will attempt to stop one of the best pure strikers in the heavyweight division. Beating Mark Hunt is not an easy feat, even in this stage of his career. If Blaydes does beat Hunt, he will for sure catapult up the heavyweight rankings, possibly putting him the top five. This is a very winnable fight for Blaydes – he just needs to be ready for the violence that comes along with fighting Mark Hunt.

Jussier Formiga vs Ben Nguyen – This is the second fight on the list from the UFC 221 card. A flyweight battle between two top 10 fighters in Jussier Formiga and Ben Nguyen is set to take place at UFC 221 along with the aforementioned Mark Hunt-Curtis Blaydes throw down.

With just two wins in his last four fights, #4 ranked flyweight Jussier Formiga will attempt to turn things around against a tough opponent in Ben Nguyen. Formiga has notable losses against some of the best in the divisions including Henry Cejudo, Joseph Benavidez and John Dodson. Formiga is a busy jiu jitsu practitioner who isn’t afraid to strike. If Formiga stops Nguyen, he just might find himself one fight away from a championship fight.

Ben Nguyen is on a path to a championship fight. He continues to show why he was once one of the top prospects in all of MMA by putting on impressive performances. Nguyen, the #8 ranked flyweight, will attempt to stop a higher ranked fighter in Formiga. If Nguyen does win this fight, he could possibly find himself in the top five, one or two wins away from a shot at the flyweight strap.

Aung La N Sang vs Alexandre Machado – ONE Championship returns with a light heavyweight title fight between middleweight champion Aung La N Sang and contender Alexadre Machado. The fight between N Sang and Machado will be the main event title fight of a pretty good card on February 23.

One Championship’s middleweight champion Aung L N Sang is on my list of guys that should be in the UFC soon. He is an impressive fighter that is on a path to relevance not just in Asia but the entire world. If N Sang continues to win, a call to the UFC might happen. With a win against Alexandre Machado, he will have two championship belts in one of MMA’s top promotions. This would be a great feat which might possibly force the UFC’s hand.

Alexandre Machado is a Brazilian heavyweight that is coming off of his first win in ONE Championship. This fight with middleweight champion N Sang will be by far the toughest of Machado’s career. If he does win and continues to defend the light heavyweight strap, we might just see Machado in Bellator or even the UFC.

Jessica Andrade vs Tecia Torres – Out of all of the fights this month, the Jessica Andrade vs. Tecia Torres battle might just be the best. This fight will be the co-main event at UFC Fight Night Orlando on February 24. This is a battle between the #2 and #5 ranked Strawweights.

Jessica Andrade is coming off of an impressive win against former title contender Claudia Gadelha which won Fight of the Night. With a win over Torres, Andrade will most likely position herself to get another shot at the title. Andrade is a game fighter that throws bombs with every strike. She has shown to have an impressive gas tank even though she is bigger than most of her opponents. Andrade is the #2 ranked Strawweight, with a win against Torres, a championship fight could possibly be in her future.

With just one loss in 11 fights, the #5 ranked Strawweight Tecia Torres will try to take out the second ranked Jessica Andrade. This will not be a an easy fight but Torres is on the top of her game right now. Torres is a grinder who won’t out strike Andrade but will stand and bang. This may not be a great position to take in a fight with Andrade but Torres is smart and will do what she has to do in order to win a fight.
