Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix: Exciting Matchups to Make

Bellator MMA recently announced they are crowning their next heavyweight champion through an eight-man tournament. With fighters such as Rampage Jackson, Chael Sonnen and Fedor Emelianennko joining the tournament, there are many exciting matchups that could be made. Below are the matchups I believe Bellator should make in the first round of the tournament.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Chael Sonnen

Both are legends but  for very different reasons. Fedor put on one of the most legendary careers consistently taking down the best competition in the world during his prime. Sonnen, while performing well, has made more headlines with his mouth and continues to draw in crowds despite recent subpar performances.

These two are a perfect first round match for each other for several reasons. Both are towards the end of their respective careers and haven’t performed well in recent fights. They are also two of the smaller fighters in the tournament. Lastly, by having them face each other early on, it ensures that a major draw will move to the second round.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Roy “Big Country” Nelson

This is another fight between two veterans who have a limited number of fights left. Both like to stand and throw bombs without the fear of being taken down. This might be a slow-paced fight, but fireworks are all but guaranteed. Plus the two have history when Rampage was a coach and Roy Nelson a competitor on The Ultimate Fighter 10.

Matt Mitrione vs. Muhammed Lawal

Frank Mir vs. Ryan Bader

These two fights can be mixed and matched but I’d prefer Bader and Lawal to avoid each other because it is more than likely they will have to fight at light heavyweight as well.

There are plenty of exciting options that Bellator can pursue. Which matchups would you like to see?
