Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (33-10, 1 NC MMA, 20-7 UFC) is a perennial contender in the UFC’s lightweight and welterweight divisions. While Cerrone recently entertained a move back to lightweight, it appears like he’ll be remaining at welterweight for at least one more fight. Cerrone is coming off of an impressive first round knockout victory over Yancy Meideros at UFC Austin.
Cerrone dispatched of Meideros in the main event of UFC Austin, which took place in Austin, Texas, on February 18. Should the matchup with Edwards be confirmed, it will be a four month layoff for “Cowboy”.
With Cerrone ranked eleventh in the UFC’s official rankings, a matchup with #14-ranked Leon Edwards does make a lot of sense.
Edwards (15-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) has had a remarkable start to his UFC career. The English native rose through the BAMMA promotion before breaking into the UFC’s ranks. Recently, Edwards has been on a tear, with five wins in his last six fights.
Since a unanimous decision loss to top contender Kamaru Usman, Edwards has been perfect. Wins over Dominic Waters, Albert Tumenov, Vincente Lucque, Bryan Barberena, and most recently Peter Sobotta propelled “Rocky” into the top fifteen.
The victory over Sobotta, which tied the record for the latest stoppage in a three round fight in UFC history, came just weeks ago at UFC London. After the fight, Edwards campaigned for a fight against countryman Darren Till, but Till was ultimately matched with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.
If the bout is finalized, Edwards will be making a three month turnaround.
The winner of this proposed matchup between Cerrone and Edwards stands to break into the top ten of a crowded welterweight division. It should be an interesting clash of styles and eras. Cerrone and Edwards are separated by almost a decade of age.
The matchup joins a scarce set of fights currently announced as targeted for UFC Singapore. The card would include the following:
- Nadia Kassem vs. Xiaonan Yan
- Jenel Lausa vs. Ashkan Mokhtarian
- Jessica Eye vs. Jessica Rose-Clark
- Donald Cerrone vs. Leon Edwards
