Derrick Lewis vs Alexander Volkov Targeted as Co-Main Event of McGregor-Khabib UFC 229 Card

The UFC is targeting Derrick Lewis (20-5) vs Alexander Volkov (30-6) in a Heavyweight co-main event fight for UFC 229 on October 6th in Las Vegas, UFC president Dana White told ESPN.

UFC 229 is shaping up to be a historic event headlined by a lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

“The Black Beast” is looking to rebound from what some are calling one of the worst UFC fights ever as beat Francis Ngannou via decision. They were both roundly booed by the audience at UFC 226 that saw both fighters combine to throw just over a couple dozen of strikes.

Russian fighter Volkov is on a six-fight winning streak and looks to be headlining with comrade Khabib. “Drago” is coming off a 4th round KO over former Champ Fabricio Werdum at UFC London.

Despite Lewis’ highly criticized fight vs Ngannou the stake are very high here as he is still the #2 Heavyweight in the UFC ranking with Volkov ranked at #5 with having the added bonus of being a former Champ for Bellator and M-1 Challenge.
