Diego Brandao To Fight Akhmet Aliev in September
Fresh off signing a bout agreement this weekend, the rumours from Russia are that Brandao will be fighting number one ranked Fight Nights Global Lightweight, Akhmet Aliev.
Not long after Fight Night Global 71, which was headlined by Kickboxing champion-turned-MMA fighter, Vladimir Mineev, it was revealed that ten-fight UFC vet, Diego Brandao (22-11), had signed a bout agreement for a Lightweight showdown in September.
Rumours coming out of Russia are that his opponent will be Eagles MMA standout, Akhmet Aliev (15-4), who is riding a five-fight win streak and boasts an overall 11-1 record in FNG – formerly known by EFN. With reports that current FNG Lightweight champion Magomedsaygid Alibekov will be defending his title against Murad Machaev later this year, it appears the bout between Brandao and Aliev will be a bonafide number one contender bout should Brandao re-sign with FNG once his contract expires after his next fight.
Aliev most recently defeated UFC veteran, Efrain Escudero. Brandao is currently 2-0 in FNG having bested Vener Galiev and the aforementioned Machaev, as he beat the latter via a flying helicopter armbar which would go viral in the MMA community.
As reported by MMA Today, just a few short weeks ago it appeared that Brandao wasn’t happy with the promotion. MMA Today has reached out to Brandao to clarify if this is still the last fight on his current contract. As of publishing Brandao is still yet to respond.
Sources have now confirmed with MMA Today that Brandao vs. Aliev is booked for September.
