Exclusive: Boston Salmon Vs. Augusto Mendes Set for UFC Sao Paulo
Sources have revealed to MMA Today that a bantamweight battle between newly signed Boston Salmon and three fight veteran Augusto Mendes is set to go down at UFC Fight Night Sao Paolo on October 28th. Both men are rising stars outside of the top 15 who are trying to make a splash in such a talented division.
Boston Salmon was among the fighters to earn a ticket to the UFC on Dana White’s summer long “Tuesday Night Contender Series”. Salmon competed on the first episode of the series on July 11th, beating Team Alpha Male standout Ricky Turcios by unanimous decision. Salmon is making his UFC debut with a 6-1 record, with his only loss being a very controversial split decision to Zac Riley that had former AXS Fights announcer Michael Schiavello screaming bloody robbery at the Colorado state judges.
Augusto Mendes is a BJJ black belt who has gone 1-2 in the UFC. The UFC has given Mendes top fighters right off the bat, and though he suffered a TKO loss to Cody Garbrandt in his debut he did manage to rock the future champ with a punch. After that loss, Mendes rebounded against a very tough Frankie Saenz in a Fight of the Night winning three rounder. Most recently in April, Mendes lost a hard fought decision to another top contender Aljamain Sterling.
UFC Sao Paulo, also known as UFC Fight Night 119 will take place in Brazil October 28th. The card is not full yet but it will hold a battle between two top Light Heavyweights in Misha Cirkunov and Brazil’s own Glover Teixeira.
