EXCLUSIVE: Chase Sherman vs. Shamil Abdurakhimov in the Works for UFC Shanghai
Chase Sherman (11-3, 2-2 UFC) has quickly become one of the most popular fighters in the UFC’s heavyweight division, both for his skills inside the cage and on the keyboard. Starting off 0-2 in his UFC career, the Mississippi native has rebounded winning his last two fights in exciting fashion, while gaining thousands of Twitter followers along the way. Witty tweets, hilarious gifs and the introduction of the app “GifJif” has made “The Vanilla Gorilla” quite the fan favorite.
Following his win over Damian Grabowski at UFC on FOX in Long Island, Sherman was called out by UFC heavyweight Daniel Spitz, but the bout has apparently not materialized. MMA Today has confirmed with sources close to the situation that a bout between Sherman and Russian Shamil Abdurakhimov (17-4, 2-2 UFC) is in the works for UFC Fight Night: Shanghai on November 25th.
Abdurakhimov has not competed since December of last year, when he lost in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Albany to “The Black Beast” Derrick Lewis. Abdurakhimov was a major underdog in the bout, but was able to bring it to Lewis prior to being finished, and was even winning the bout in the eyes of some. Abdurakhimov suffered multiple broken bones in the bout, but has taken his time off to heal up and is now ready to go.
UFC Fight Night: Shanghai takes place November 25th live from the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. It is the UFC’s debut in mainland China, which will air live on UFC Fight Pass in the United States. The card is currently headlined by former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva as he takes on top contender Kelvin Gastelum.
