Fight Nights Global 79 Results, Recap and Clips: Pavlovich, Pesta Earn Quick Wins

Fight Nights Global returned on Sunday with their 79th event from Penza, Russia. The card was headlined by a Heavyweight title bout between top prospect Sergey Pavlovich (12-0 MMA) and Fedor Emelianenko’s protege Kirill Sidelnikov (11-5 MMA). The co-main event featured Viktor Pesta (12-4 MMA, 1-4 UFC) making his second appearance since leaving the UFC facing off against the veteran Alexei Kudin.

Sergey Pavlovich (11-0) def. Kirill Sidelnikov (11-4) (T/KO via punches in RD1)

Pavlovich made a statement by knocking out Sidelnikov just over the halfway point of the very first round. The fight started off tentatively with both fighters exchanging strikes in the mid-range but neither landing anything of note. However, the fight came to a sudden conclusion as Pavlovich landed a looping overhand right which clipped Sidelnikov just behind the ear and caused him to flop to his face. Pavlovich followed with some ground-and-pound which forced the referee to step in. This victory marks Pavlovich’s first defense of his Heavyweight Championship and solidifies him as arguably the best heavyweight prospect outside the UFC.

Viktor Pesta (11-4) def. Alexei Kudin (23-10)

(Submission via rear-naked choke in RD1)

Pesta made his FNG debut with a first-round submission over Kudin. Pesta scored an early takedown and effortlessly passed into mount with over three minutes remaining. From there he attempted to land some ground-and-pound but Kudin defended well and did not concede meaningful damage. However, as the round went on, Pesta was able to posture up and land damaging strikes which led to Kudin giving up his back. Pasta continued to land strikes to a covered up Kudin until he sunk in the rear-naked-choke and got the tap with less than ten seconds remaining in the round. In the post-fight interview, Pesta stated that he prefers working his way up to the title rather than jumping the queue.
