Former Champion Eddie Alvarez signs with Asia-based ONE Championship

Eddie Alverez’s contract with the UFC came to an end after the loss to Dustin Poirier earlier this year in July. ‘The Original Most Violent Man’ has been signed by the Singapore-based mixed martial arts promotion ONE Championship. Over the 34-year-old’s storied 15 year MMA career Alvarez has beaten elite fighters like: Roger Huerta, Patricky Freire, Michael Chandler, Gilbert Melendez, Anthony Pettis, Rafael Dos Anjos and most recently  Justin Gaethje. Alvarez currently has a 29-6 record and went 4-3-0, (1 NC) in the UFC.

Founder, Chairman and CEO of ONEChampionship,  Chatri Sityodtong announcing signing of Alvarez

Alvarez started his career with a perfect 10-0 record.  The Underground King has also held the inaugural BodogFIGHT Welterweight Championship, the MFC Welterweight Championship and the inaugural Reality Fighting Welterweight Championship.

Eddie fought in the Japanese DREAM promotion for their 154lbs. grand prix. Alvarez did extremely well and scored a first round TKO and hard fought unanimous decision before knocking out the tournament’s favorite, Tatsuya Kawajiri by knockout in the semi finals. Unfortunately Alvarez had sustained too much damage to fight for the Inaugural Dream Lightweight Title and the man that he beat in the round previous had to step in.

Alvarez will forever be cemented in Bellator MMA promotion history. Eddie fought on the inaugural Bellator 1 card in a co-main event bout at 155 lbs. in the lightweight division. This fight was in the opening round of an eight man tournament.  During the first season of Bellator from April 3- June 19th 2009 Alvarez would compete three times, finish all three of his opponents and win the first ever Lightweight Championship in Bellator promotion history. Eddie built his reputation as an exciting stand and bang fighter that could take a punch with excellent wrestling skills too.

After years of waiting to be signed by the UFC the dream was finally realized with his first opponent being Donald “ Cowboy” Cerrone in late 2014 at UFC 178. Alvarez would lose a decision in this fight but come back stronger than ever winning a decision split decision against Gilbert Melendez in June 2015 and against a heavily favored Anthony Pettis in January 2016.  Eddie Alvarez shook up the MMA world with his first round TKO of Rafael Dos Anjos in July of 2016 and captured the UFC Lightweight Championship a truly defining moment in his career. Alvarez also headlined the historic UFC 205 against Conor McGregor in Madison Square Garden,  the first fight in MMA history in the state of New York.

With Eddie Alvarez’s move to ONE Championship also brings the fact that will no longer be able to cut weight thanks to the promotions “walking weight fights” approach. Look to see Eddie Alvarez at his more natural weight of 170lbs. in the lightweight division of ONE Championships.
