Kickboxing Star Hesdy Gerges Signs with Bellator MMA

Hesdy Gerges is a world-class kickboxer. He’s also the newest addition to a rapidly growing Bellator heavyweight division. According to a report early this morning from NUSport, Gerges has signed with Bellator MMA to begin a career in mixed martial arts.

Bellator MMA is currently in the midst of their World Heavyweight Grand Prix to crown a new, undisputed heavyweight champion. In doing so, they have added a wealth of notable names to the division, such as Frank Mir and Fedor Emelianenko.

While Gerges is likely some ways away from an MMA title – and too late to participate in the tournament – he is still an intriguing add to the division, and the promotion as a whole.

Gerges, 34, is super heavyweight kickboxer, but will compete at heavyweight in MMA. The six-foot-six GLORY standout weighs in at two-hundred and forty-four pounds.

In kickboxing, he has competed in K-1, It’s Showtime, Kunlun Fight, SUPERKOMBAT, GLORY, and other various promotions. Most recently, the Dutch-born striker competed in GLORY, where he lost a unanimous decision to the legendary Badr Hari.

Gerges holds a professional kickboxing record of  50-20-1 (23 KOs). In 2016, he won the Kings of the Ring World K-1 Rules Super Heavyweight Championship. Recently, however, Gerges has been on a slight skid, going 5-7 in his twelve fights since 2015.

Regardless, it is clear that his striking prowess will be invaluable in his transition to MMA.

He’ll join his wife, Denise Kielholtz – a high-level kickboxer in her own right – as a Bellator MMA fighter. Kielholtz signed to Bellator in 2016, competing in both kickboxing and MMA for the promotion.

It is unclear whether Gerges will compete in Bellator Kickboxing, or if his transition to MMA is exclusive. At any rate, the heavyweight striker is excited to be there.

Speaking with NUSport, Gerges said, “after eighteen years of kickboxing, I am looking forward to show my in-face style at Bellator.”

That in-your-face style will likely be applauded by fans and feared by opponents for years to come in the cage. There is no date or opponent announced for Gerges’ debut at this time.

In an Instagram post announcing the signing, Gerges said, “I am coming to take over the whole #Bellator heavyweight division!” It will be interesting to watch him make the shift to MMA, and likely produce some highlights in the years to come.
