Mauro Cerilli to sign with ONE Championship

Italian heavyweight close to finalize a deal with Asian leading promotion as he will face the current champion Brandon Vera

It wasn’t that long ago that Fight1, the most important combat sports Italian promotion, announced it inked a collaboration with the leading promotion in Asia, ONE Championship.

And we had to wait no time in order to see an Italian fighter go East as Cage Warriors heavyweight champion Mauro Cerilli (12-2-0) is close to finalize a deal with ONE, sources told MMA Today.

Cerilli’s last bout was in March when he KO’d Irish rising star Karl Moore within 15 seconds. After that victory (his firts successful title defense), the fighter coming from Terracina hasn’t step foot in the cage yet. It is unclear if that was only due to minor injuries or the lack of opponents in Europe.

It’s no secret that Mauro was waiting for a call from Western side of the world, namely the UFC. A call we guess hasn’t arrived just yet. Meanwhile other promoters should have liked what they’ve seen in Cage Warriors’ territory and decided to reach out to The Hammer.

Cerilli, who would probably be stripped of his Cage Warriors strap, is rumored to face UFC veteran and current ONE belt holder, Brandon “The Truth” Vera (15-7-0, 1 NC) for his first fight in the Eastern hemisphere.

And if an Italian fighter is going to Asia, Asia is going to Italy since ONE is looking to host an event in the “Bel Paese” within 2 years, sources told MMA Today.

That should be another step in the growing of Italian MMA movement.
