Report: Nicco Montano vs Valentina Shevchenko being looked at for UFC Calgary Main Event
Former Bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko will face Nicco Montano for the flyweight title at UFC Calgary according to reports from MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani.
The UFC’s long-awaited return to Calgary is officially official. No main event announced, though I’m told the hope is to book Nicco Montaño vs. Valentina Shevchenko for the women’s flyweight title in that spot. Not finalized yet but that’s what they want. https://t.co/yEN7el8vYZ— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) April 27, 2018
After falling short to Brazilian star and 135lb champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 215, Shevchenko announced her move to 125lbs where she defeated Priscila Cachoeira in the co-main event at UFC Fight Night 125.
With the flyweight division not being as deep as the bantamweight division, it seems “The Bullet” has a new home and one in which many believe she will reign supreme.
In her way stands champion Nicco Montano, who defeated Roxanne Modafferi at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale for the vacant flyweight title.
However, despite being the reigning champion, with a 4-2 record and just Modafferi on her record as a known name, questions loom over Montano’s ability. These questions will be answered on the 28th July should the UFC’s wishes of booking the fight come true.
Though nothing is official yet, Shevchenko has often been vocal about her ambitions of the title and is undoubtedly the best contender that the UFC can offer Montano at this point in time.
Whether Montano will accept the fight with Valentina Shevchenko is another question and remains to be seen.
