ROAD FC 41 YOUNG GUNS: KNOCKOUTS GALORE AND A PHANTOM SUBMISSION

ROAD FC’s developmental league, Young Guns 35, went down before the main card of ROAD FC 41 in Wonju, South Korea and it was filled with plenty of action but not without some controversy.

In the feature bout of the evening, Korean journeyman Jae-Nam Yoo picked up a much needed submission victory over Tatsuhito Satsuma in the first round. The longtime training partner of ROAD FC Bantamweight Champion Soo-Chul Kim was riding a 4-fight losing streak, where he was finished every single time, and displayed there is still some dog in him by dismantling his Japanese challenger via rear-naked choke.

Korean prospects such as Seung-Min Shin and Won-Hee Jung both picked up impressive knockout finishes over their rivals leaving no doubt to the power they possess in their hands. Shin used a forward pressure attack with a right hand that landed on the button while Jung overcame a huge reach advantage to starch his foe. Both these men are in the beginning stages of their careers but show the urgency to get to the main stage.

However, there were some moments during the prelims where the referee made hiccups that cost the fighters. In the middleweight clash between In-Soo Hwang and Jong-Hwan Lee, Hwang clearly poked Lee in the eye seconds before the latter combatant was destroyed with punches. Lee looked at the ref immediately after the eye-poke but the ref ignored his complaint and watched the young fighter lose his professional debut.

Unfortunately, the same ref was in charge during the women’s catchweight contest when striker Yuri Shim took on debutant Hyun-Joo Baek. The first round was dominated by Shim with sharp knees in the clinch to the body while defending some takedowns against the fence.

Going into the second round, most viewers figured that Shim would take out the newcomer on the feet but Baek landed a Dan Henderson-type overhand right that floored her opponent. She subsequently follow her to the mat to work some ground and pound but that did not work out too well.

While Shim had Baek in her guard, the referee came in and waved off the fight because he thought Baek was unconscious from a choke that was not even close to being a threat. This was the second time of the night this official had ruined the debut of a young up-and-comer.
