Robert Whittaker to Defend Belt Against Yoel Romero at UFC 225

Chicago – Stand Up! UFC 225 has a championship main event!

The UFC Middleweight Championship will be on the line at UFC 225 in at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Robert Whittaker will defend his title against the man he beat to win the belt, Yoel “Soldier of God” Romero, first reported by Chris Taylor of

Whittaker’s last octagon appearance came when he beat Romero at UFC 213 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight wound up being a five-round thriller that won Fight of the Night Honors. This fight was for the Interim Middleweight Championship. Later Whittaker would be named the Undisputed Middleweight Champion.

The champion has yet to defend his title due to a staph infection in his stomach. “Bobby Knuckles” is on a seven-fight win streak dating back to summer of 2014. Since making his middleweight debut in late-November 2014, he has fought some of the best in the division. Much like his personality, Whittaker quietly became a fan favorite due to either finishing opponents or putting on Fight of the Night fights.

Like his opponent, Romero is also a fan favorite due to putting on exciting fights. Romero has gotten to the point of being a championship contender for back-to-back-to-back wins over Lyota Machida, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and former champion Chris Weidman. “The Soldier of God” has only one defeat in the UFC: the UFC 213 loss to Whittaker. Now, Romero will get a shot at redemption of that loss and another crack at the UFC middleweight title.

The full UFC 225 card has yet to be announced. These are the fights we know of now: For the UFC Middleweight Championship Robert Whittaker will take on Yoel Romero. In a heavyweight contest, Alistair Overeem will go head up with hometown hero Curtis Blaydes. Women’s Strawweight Carla Esparza will take on Claudia Gadelha. Flyweight Joseph Benavidez will go toe-to-toe with Sergio Pettis.
