ONE Championship’s Stergos Mikkios to Leap From Muay Thai to MMA
The hottest new promotion, ONE Championship, is making waves in the Asian market and around the world for having some of the best fighters on the planet. They not only deal in MMA, but Muay Thai and even more recently, boxing. In their Muay Thai ranks is Stergos Mikkios. “Greek Dynamite” is a three-time Muay Thai champion and wants to fight MMA soon…very soon. MMA Today recently had a chance to sit down and talk with Mikkios and get to know him a little more.
Who wants to see me back in @onechampionship!I have some great news coming to you by next month, and in partnering up…
“I got started in MMA because I was getting bullied a lot. I was born with scars and burned tissue so I was getting made fun of a lot. Most of the time I was defending myself through school, but I wasn’t introduced to martial arts just yet. I was just fighting with my own spirit. But, I was introduced to martial arts when I got out of high school. I was introduced to Muay Thai at the age of 22. It was kind of late for me. Now, I’m 28 so I’ve been practicing for six years.”
Mikkios last fought Ognjen Topic back in June for ONE. While the fight didn’t go his way, Mikkios was looking at the bigger picture of the fight and the promotion. “I want to go back to before the fight. After I was done fighting in Thailand, I went back to Greece. After some bad management, I went back home to my island and started working as a construction worker. No Thai, nothing for six months. Then I messaged ONE Championship and spoke with Chatri Sityodtong, the CEO, on the phone. He gave me a chance to fight Topic. I only had a month to prepare for Topic after a six month layoff.” After watching the fight, you can’t tell. Mikkios walked down Topic like a zombie giving him all the hell he could handle. After the fight, Mikkios told Topic he wants the rematch. “This time with MMA gloves.”
“I had three weeks to get my weight management in order, and the training. It wasn’t enough training. I told Topic, I only had three weeks to train for him. I could have done better.”
After the Topic fight Mikkios is completely happy with ONE Championships, but he wants time to train and get ready for this next bout. “I told them ‘I’ll be available at the start of September. Starting then, you guys can have me any time you want. I need to get back to where I was first. I need to focus on my training and footwork.”
The Future is MMA
Mikkios just turned pro in 2017. As an amateur he is 19-9-2. With so much time in the amateur stage, Mikkios is now ready to continue his pro career. Even, MMA. “I mostly want to do MMA before I turn 30. I want to do kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA for ONE. That’s my goal.” The Triple Crown.
As for ONE, as an organization, Mikkios has nothing but great things to say. “They’re so organized, I mean, so organized. Everything runs so smooth and perfect. They treat you very well. As soon as i got to my hotel for my fight, they checked us out, we went and ate, they gave us money to spend throughout the week. They’re awesome man.”
