UFC 229 gets bantamweight clash with Yana Kunitskaya vs Lina Lansberg

The UFC's big October event is beginning to take shape

After the monster-sized announcement that UFC 229 on October 6th would be headlined by the highly anticipated lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, it only made sense that more bout announcements were soon to follow.

The event will take place in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and in addition to Nurmagomedov vs McGregor, we’re now being treated to our first of potentially multiple female bouts as Lina Lansberg will be welcoming the former Invicta FC bantamweight champion Yana Kunitskaya back down to the 135-pound weight class.

Initially reported by Kimura, Kunitskaya later confirmed the news today on Twitter.

“So excited to be part of the huge show ☄️ #ufc229 khabib_nurmagomedov vs thenotoriousmma thank u ufc dominancemma_ mickmaynard2 for opportunities 👊 #vegas #ufc #fightcamp #blessed”

Both Kunitskaya and Lansberg actually made their UFC debuts against the dominant UFC featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino.

For Lansberg, she found herself in 2016’s UFC Brasilia main event opposite the future champion in a 140-pound catchweight contest. Cyborg would end up scoring the second round TKO victory and Lansberg has now gone 2-1 since then with her most recent win coming over Gina Mazany at UFC Liverpool in May.

Looking to earn her first UFC win will be her opponent, Kunitskaya who made her UFC debut in a somewhat short notice featherweight title opportunity against Cyborg in March at UFC 222.

Unfortunately for the Russian, the outcome would remain the same as it was for the Swedish Lansberg.

Now back at 135, Kunitskaya will look to continue to show the high-level skills that she displayed in Invicta that earned her a world championship.

As for the rest of the card, the only other fight to have been announced as of right now is a flyweight scrap pitting Sergio Pettis against Jussier ‘Formiga’ Da Silva. Another flyweight bout between Joseph Benavidez and Ray Borg is also in the works as reports MMA Nytt.
