UFC 231 Championship Fight Staff Predictions
Headlining one of the better cards in recent memory are two UFC title fights. The main event pits Featherweight champion Max “Blessed” Holloway up against Brian “T-City” Ortega. In a co-main event banger, Muay Thai rivals Valentina “Bullet” Shevchenko will fight former Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the vacant Flyweight title.
The MMA-Today staff have pondered enough, now they are ready to give their predictions for the two UFC 231 title fights.
Featherweight Championship – Champion Max Hollway versus Brian Ortega
Will Toronto become the 10th Island or T-City? 🇨🇦
— UFC (@ufc) December 7, 2018
Shawn Bitter – It’s hard to pick between Holloway and Ortega, as I really like both guys. Fans are kind of doubting Holloway since the weight cutting mishap. With that said, when has the weight cut affected him before? He has been looking great the last few years. While Ortega is game, I feel the only way he beats Holloway is if he catches him. I don’t think Ortega has any kind of advantage on the feet. He does on the mat though but I don’t think he has the ability to get it there.
Prediction: Max Holloway, Unanimous Decision
Drake Riggs – Ortega, Round 5 Submission
Stephen King – This will be an incredibly entertaining, high calibre fight. Both Max Holloway and Brian Ortega are at the top of their fights games, so this is the perfect time for this matchup. One is better on the mats, the other is better on the feet. They’re both technical and well rounded fighters making this a highly desirable fight for fans of MMA. This is such a good and fun fight, it’s hard to go against either guy. So maybe they give us 5 rounds of hell and the judges don’t know how to call it – because MMA judging?
Prediction: Max Holloway, Split-Decison
Vacant Women’s Flyweight Championship – Valentina Shevchenko versus Joanna Jedrzejczyk
— UFC (@ufc) December 8, 2018
Shawn Bitter – Shevchenko versus Jedrzejczyk is a battle between two of the best women’s martial artists in the world. As many look forward to it, I think it will be a slow, methodical chess match that results in a close fight. I’m leaning toward Shevchenko due to the size and pressure she will put on her opponent.
Prediction: Shevchenko, Split-Decison
Drake Riggs – Shevchenko, Round 4 Submission
Stephen King – This haas been a fight that marinated for years. We knew we would eventually see these two rivals fight in the Octagon, we just didn’t know when. It’s here now and both women made weight and are ready for battle. Sure Shevchenko has the size and is a counter puncher but I feel like y’all forgot Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a former champion. Both women are great fighters and pretty evenly matched. It will be fun to see what their game plans are for each other given they’ve fought three times in Muay Thai already. This should be a standup battle that might have a few takedown attempts every round. We couldn’t ask for a better fight to co-headline a great card.
Prediction: Jedrzejczyk, Unanimous Decision
