UFC Argentina Recap: Cynthia Calvillo makes her return submitting Poliana Botelho

Saturday night marked the first ever event appearance in Argentina by the UFC. The main card was kicked off by an excellent women’s strawweight matchup between two contenders looking to crack the top ten, Cynthia Calvillo (6-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Poliana Botelho (7-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC). Cynthia Calvillo missed weight before the bout weighing in at 118lbs. and forfeiting 20% of her fight purse to her opponent, as a result. Calvillo is coming off of the first loss of her young MMA career against #8 ranked, former strawweight champion, Carla Esparza. To make matters worse, Cynthia was slapped with a nine month suspension as the result of a positive in-competition test for marijuana. The suspension was handed down in earlier this year in March.  Poliana Botelho’s last time in the Octagon resulted in a brutal, body kick to ground and pound win, in the very first round against Syuri Kondo. It took just 33 seconds. Poliana’s other win in the UFC came against the always game Pearl Gonzalez by unanimous decision. The winner of this fight will likely come very close to cracking the top 15 women’s strawweight ranks and put themselves in a position for a huge 2019.

Round 1: Both fighters begin the first round by feeling each other out, not throwing anything but kicks for the first 30 seconds. Botelho is throwing powerful kicks to the body of her opponent. Calvillo catches one of these naked kicks and she is able to capitalize and land a single leg takedown. However, Botelho quickly explodes back up to her feet resuming her barrage leg kicks and body kicks with bad intentions. Calvillo is also staying on the outside throwing cautious strikes of her own. The two fighters continue to stay on the outside respecting each other and landing short combinations before darting back out. Again Botelho throws a body kick that is caught by Calvillo resulting in another single leg takedown. But this time Botelho is not so quick to spring to her feet and her opponent starts to dominate her on the ground. Calvillo easily passes her opponents guard landing heavy strikes to her head. Botelho makes the technical error of exposing her back while trying to scramble to her feet. And Cynthia is able to secure a very deep rear-naked choke, so tight, that Botelho is forced to tap with just mere seconds left in the round.

Cynthia Calvillo defeats Poliana Botelho via rear naked choke in 4:48 of the first round.

Cynthia Calvillo improves to (7-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) while Poliana Botelho  falls to (7-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC).
