UFC Argentina Recap: Johnny Walker Starches Khalil Rountree with Brutal Elbow

The UFC’s first ever trip to Argentina had a main card that featured two monsters in the ultra-competitive light-heavyweight division. Khalil Rountree (7-2, 1 NC MMA, 3-2, 1 NC UFC) welcomed UFC newcomer Johnny Walker (14-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on the main card of UFC Fight Night 140. Johnny Walker is getting his shot in the UFC after his impressive unanimous decision win of Luis Henrique da Silva on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series earlier this year earning himself a contract. Walker stands at 6′ 6″ and possesses a massive reach advantage.  Rountree is an Ultimate Fighter 23 finalist,  that after going 0-2, reversed his UFC career and is currently riding on a 4 fight unbeaten streak (3 wins, 1 no contest). Khalil’s most impressive showing was his last fight against kickboxing legend,  Gokhan Saki, earlier this year at UFC 226. Khalil unleashed an absolute bombardment of punches on the legend finishing him in the very first round. Every fight in the light heavyweight division is an important one and a flashy win for either fighter could result potentially result in a ranking in the very shallow light heavyweight division.

Round 1:

Walker comes out in a karate like stance bouncing in and out of range. The UFC newcomer looks really quick and relaxed in the octagon. In the beginning of the round, Khalil lands a couple of leg kicks that sound damaging.  But, out of nowhere Johhny closes the distance and lands a head kick followed by a combination of hand strikes closing the distance. Khalil attempts to respond with strikes of his own but most don’t land flush as his opponent closes on him. Walker initiates the clinch controlling Khalil’s position and pushing him back across the octagon before landing a swift elbow propelling his opponent to the canvas. Walker ices the cake with a couple more punches on the ground sealing his impressive debut.

Results: Johnny Walker defeats Khalil Rountree, in 1:57 of the first round via Knockout.

Johnny Walker improves to (15-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Khalil Rountree falls to (7-3, 1 NC MMA, 3-2, 1 NC UFC).
