UFC Denver Recap: Cowboy Cerrone Submits Mike Perry on Historical Night
Mike Perry and Donald Cerrone, two of the most entertaining fighters on the roster meet on the 25th anniversary in Denver. Neither are strangers to violence, this is one of those fights fans dream about, and now its a reality. Perry is coming off of a FOTY contender in his victory over Paul Felder. Cerrone has only won 1 of his previous 5 bouts, but all of those were against respective killers.
Round one begins with “Platinum” Perry immediately pressuring the hometown hero. Perry swings wildly, resulting in a clinch battle, Cerrone opens with his well known knees to the body. As the fight returns to the middle of the cage Cerrone lands with a few jabs. With under 2 minutes remaining in the round, Perry lands a successful takedown, within seconds “Cowboy” transitions into side control himself. As Perry is in unfamiliar territory, he hands Cerrone his back. Throughout transitions Perry ends up on top but not safe, as Cerrone controls the arm of Perry, “Platinum” attempts to slam Cerrone out of control but it is to late, a tap from Perry due to armbar.
Donald Cerrone, who left his longtime gym after they seemed to choose his teammate Perry for this fight. Cerrone is now the all time UFC win record holder AND all time finish record holder. This was an admittedly emotional win for Cerrone, in his backyard, looking at his son in a jean jacket and belt buckle, “I saw him back stage and said hell no no one is taking food off of his table.”
As the post-fight interview came to a close, Cerrone announced he will be returning to 155 and sent a chilling message Khabib’s way, “Khabib I’m coming for you, Cowboy is back.” An impressive 1st round submission win for the all time leader.
