Many expected the fight between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier to be a fight of the year candidate. After UFC Glendale, the answer is a resounding “yes.”

After Poirier outlanded Gaethje by more than double the strikes in the first two rounds, Gaethje looked to take over in the third. In the fourth, Poirier finally caught Gaethje and took his legs from under him. Poirier then closed in and finished the fight earning his victory the gladiator way.
Post-fight, Poirier called out the newly-crowned lightweight champ, Khabib Nurmagomedov to finally throw down. After stringing together six wins and a no contest in his last eight, he’s become a legitimate contender in the already stacked UFC lightweight division. Poirier has wins over Jim Miller, Anthony Pettis, and Yancy Medeiros amongst others, as well as a controversial no contest versus Eddie Alvarez.
One issue that came up once again in the match was eye pokes. Dustin Poirier was poked in the eye two times by Gaethje. Poirier also poked Gaethje at the very end of the third. The two eye pokes from Gaethje resulted in Herb Dean taking a point away from Gaethje.
A night of close fights
Poirier and Gaethje’s war marked the end of a series of very close night of fights for UFC Glendale. Earlier in the night, Michelle Waterson defeated Courtney Casey in a split decision. UFC up and comer, Israel Adesanya also had a close split decision, over Marvin Vettori. In the co-main event, Charles Olivera choked out UFC veteran Carlos Condit after nearly being choked out in the first round.
Next card, Edson Barboza, and Kevin Lee, will be the third event in three weeks and you can be sure to follow along with the coverage here on mma-today.com!
