UFC vs. Bellator 1: Sac-Town Smackdown Presser
As fans gather at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, for the UFC vs. Bellator 1 presser, the atmosphere is palpable, as the crowd is eager with anticipation. After a slight delay, with both Dana White and Scott Coker now in attendance, matchmaker Phil Fortuna Jr grabs a mic and starts to read through the bout announcements for this inaugral mega-card.
Robbie Lawler vs Paul Daley
That’s right, we’re going to open this series with not only a fight of the night matchup, but a potential fight of the year contender, yowza!
The first bout of the card features two elite welterweights, both being fighters who just love to stay in the pocket and play a game of “you swing, I swing and let’s see who swings the hardest.” Robbie Lawler has 20 knockouts from his 28 victory career including many highlight finishes and three fight of the year awards against Johnny Hendricks, Rory Macdonald and Carlos Condit. Paul Daley has fought all over in the world, picking up 30 knockouts from his 40 win career. Having key highlight knockouts over the likes of Lorenz Larkin, Brennan Ward, Scott Smith and Daniel Weichel, among many others, he gives Robbie Lawler an equally terrifying matchup. The finish is guaranteed to be ‘Ruthless’ but for whom?
Israel Adesanya vs Ed Ruth
Following up a potential all-time classic is a matchup of two up-and-coming, as well as exciting prospects.
Let’s start with Ed Ruth: he’s still green at this stage of his MMA career and has yet to be pitted against a “name.” With that being said, he became a three time NCAA collegiate wrestling champion while attending Pennsylvania State University. His strength, athleticism and wrestling ability has proven to be overwhelming so far. On top of that, as a blue belt in BJJ he was still able to compile a 4-1 record during the 2017 Pan American championship. Despite this, all four of his MMA wins have come via knockout. Why is that important? The fellow prospect he is facing in Adesanya, is a world class striking buzzsaw and a highlight waiting to happen.
Israel Adesanya‘s MMA record is 11-0, with each fight not making it past round two. Although labelled a prospect, our friends over at Combat Press have him as the sixth ranked middleweight in the world. His most notable opponent so far has been Melvin Guillard, a former UFC and Bellator fighter, as well a veteran of 56 fights. Every other victory has come at the expense of low name guy on the regional circuit in China, New Zealand or Australia. So why is he number six? Well, his MMA record is 11-0, and oh yeah, he has a kickboxing record of 50-5-2 and a boxing record of 5-1. The man is beyond dangerous and you will see that when he makes his actual UFC debut next month. Striking is as much a part of his DNA as the blood he bleeds!
These two men against each other is beyond exciting, even if they’re not part of the MMA elite just yet. A world class wrestler versus an elite striker, so who wins? Does Ruth stick to his bread and butter or does he try to beat Adesanya at his own game? Can Adesanya prevent Ruth from getting him under control on the ground or will he K.O him first?
Daniel Cormier vs Phil Davis
Two former D1 All Americans square off here. Phil Davis, a four-time collegiate All American, is a former UFC fighter and currently the fifth ranked light heavyweight in the world according to Sherdog, whilst Daniel Cormier currently resides in the top spot. Throughout their respective careers, each man has been known for their patience, explosive wrestling ability and control. One thing that stands out for Cormier is his underrated striking, as it’s progressively improved as he’s grown as a mixed martial artist. For Phil Davis, the thing that stands out with him is his athleticism. His power and strength has a tendency to be overwhelming. If this fight stays on the ground then Mr.Wonderful has a good chance to unseat Cormier, however if it becomes a striking contest, as tends to happen when high level wrestlers face each other, then watch out for Cormier’s tactical striking. Can Cormier’s striking and cage savvy edge it or will Phil Davis’s youth and athleticism eek out an win?
Cristiane Justino vs Julia Budd
CYBORG! The sheer sound of that name ignites a spark of fear that sends a shudder down the spine of any female. Justino hasn’t lost since 2005, which was her debut fight, and has left a heap of bodies in her wake with knockout after vicious knockout. Some say she has the luxury of a weak division, others say it’s because fighters are fearful of facing the Brazilian berserker.
Her opponent, Julia Budd, is an impressive kickboxer in her own right, and even scored a win over the legendary Gina Carano. Budd is battle tested enough, has an imposing frame and has enough striking ability to give Cyborg a fight! Will it be enough?
Jon Jones vs Fedor Emelianenko
Depending on your thoughts on PEDs, Jon Jones is arguably the greatest light heavyweight fighter of all time. For this next bout we see”Bones” move up to heavyweight to face arguably the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time, “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko.
This is what we call a “MAIN EVENT!“
When fans discuss who’s the greatest fighter of all time these two names always come up. Regardless of your personal preference there is no way that both men are not top five in the conversation for greatest of all time. The outcome of this matchup may be enough to decide the G.O.A.T. Who will it be? Will it be the feared sambo expert with the most vicious ground and pound known to man? Or will it be the hardest puzzle to solve, who holds a five inch height advantage and 10 inch reach advantage?
And that concludes today’s presser. Make sure to vote on the outcomes of each fight, and of course, if there’s a bout you’re itching to see, then just holla at your boy, Phil Fortuna Jr. The matchmaker who defies the realms of reality to bring you your wildest dreams matchups.
