UFC Winnipeg Results: Josh Emmett KO’s Ricardo Lamas in Stunning Upset

In a somewhat odd matchup, unranked Team Alpha Male veteran Josh Emmett would have the shot of a lifetime. His opponent, Ricardo Lamas, entered as the number three featherweight. Lamas would be on the hunt for a good looking victory that could help his chances of a title shot, but the fight would also give a chance for Emmett to jump into the standings and make a name for himself against top competition. The fight would happen at a catchweight because Emmett weighed in 2.5 pounds overweight.

The first minute and a half of the fight had very little striking from either fighter, but Emmett came forward more after easing into the fight. Lamas would land better, however, using both high kicks and punches when his opponent entered his space. He looked like the faster of the two, quickly getting out of trouble if Emmett managed to land. Still, Emmett was the one with the heavier hands, and that showed in the finish that came in the middle of the first round.

After catching Lamas with a right-handed strike to stun him, Emmett would end the fight with a hard left hook that left Lamas unable to stand up immediately afterward. The fight went down in the record books as a knockout at the 4:33 mark, and Emmett would apologize during his post-fight interview for not making weight. He would also remind everyone that he got into this sport to be a champion. After taking out one of the main contenders to face Max Holloway for the featherweight belt, that talk doesn’t seem crazy or overconfident anymore.
