Virna Jandiroba to make first title defense against Janaisa Morandin at Invicta FC 31
Some say that the hardest part of being a champion isn’t becoming a champion but staying a champion. Invicta’s newest strawweight champion will now get to put that to the test.
MMAFighting has reported that Virna Jandiroba will be making her first Invicta FC title defense against her fellow Brazilian, Janaisa Morandin at Invicta FC 31 on September 1st.
Initially, this matchup was supposed to be the last strawweight title fight in which Jandiroba wound up becoming champion. Unfortunately for Morandin, a tooth infection forced her out of the title bout.
In turn that led to Mizuki Inoue stepping up to take on the undefeated Jandiroba for the title and the now champion had no troubles obtaining the vacant gold.
Despite a scary split decision card reading in favor of Jandiroba, everyone but judge Rochelle Montanez thought that Jandiroba won clearly. This win was only the third of Jandiroba’s career that she has won by decision. Her 10 others have all come via submission.
With her championship win, Jandiroba positioned herself right into the top 10 in MMA Today’s Drake Riggs’ Top 10 MMA Rankings worldwide at strawweight.
For Morandin, she is one of the most legit prospects at 115 pounds and if she can hand Jandiroba her first career loss, it will definitely help her peel off that label.
9-1 in her career to this point, Morandin’s lone loss came to a former Invicta champion in Livia Renata Souza who has since gone on to be signed to the UFC. Something that surely both Morandin and Jandiroba are hopeful to follow suit in after a potential big title victory in September.
