Welsh Middleweights Marshman, Phillips set to Tangle in London
With the UFC headed to the ESPN platform in 2019, many events and subsequent matchups have been swiftly filling up cards. Per an announcement via the UFC earlier this morning, the UFC on ESPN+ 5 has added its third official bout. Both hailing from Wales, middleweights Jack Marshman (22-8 MMA, 2-3 UFC) and John Phillips (21-8 MMA, 0-2 UFC) will tangle in a bout likely to air on the preliminary portion of the evening’s card. UFC on ESPN+5 takes place March 16, 2019 from the O2 Arena in London, England. The card has yet to announce its headlining main event.

The 29-year-old Marshman is in dire need of victory. The heavy-handed Welshman is coming off back-to-back losses to Karl Roberson and Antonio Carlos Jr. and has lost three of his last four. In addition, a scratched bout with Brad Scott also sits on his résumé when a failed weight-cut to 170lbs. caused the late-notice cancellation. Despite the recent woes, Marshman does hold two octagon victories to his name, the most recent coming over Ryan Janes in July of 2017. In 22 career wins, Marshman owns 18 finishes.
Standing in his way will be SBG Ireland‘s Phillips. Much like his opponent, Phillips may also be on the UFC’s chopping block having lost both of his UFC outings. In his UFC debut, Phillips was steamrolled by Fortis MMA’s Charles Byrd in a bout that also took place at London’s O2 Arena. His second UFC outing didn’t go much better for Phillips as he found himself on the losing end of a unanimous-decision victory for opponent Kevin Holland this past November at UFC Beijing. At 33-year-old, it may be do-or-die time for “The White Mike Tyson.”
